The Greene Space
At the corner of First and Quail Streets in Albany, a once-vacant lot has blossomed into a living testament to healing, renewal, and community strength. The Greene Space stands as both a memorial and a movement—honoring the Greene family and celebrating the power of a neighborhood to rise from hardship and loss into growth and connection.

A Living Legacy
Born from tragedy, The Greene Space transforms pain into purpose. It honors the Greene family, long-time West Hill residents whose home once stood on this land, and whose legacy of kindness and advocacy continues to inspire. What was once a site of loss is now a sanctuary of life—a space where neighbors can gather, children play, and hope is taking root.
Renewal Through Nature
Designed with intention and symbolism, the garden’s honeycomb pathways represent unity and interconnectedness. Stone walkways, native plants, and tree-slab benches invite reflection, accessibility, and connection. An eight-foot planter, donated by Honest Weight Food Co-op, serves as a living shrine—a centerpiece of beauty and remembrance surrounded by pollinator-friendly greenery and clover that nourishes both soil and spirit.
A Space for Everyone
The Greene Space is built for and by the community. Youth participants helped shape its foundation through the Summer Youth Employment Program. Local partners—including Honest Weight Food Co-op, Love Your Block, and Calanan Quarry—brought resources and heart. Every element embodies collaboration, accessibility, and inclusivity, ensuring all who visit feel welcome and valued.
Healing Through Art & Story
More than a garden, this is and will continue to be a canvas for expression, literacy, and storytelling. Murals, sculptures, and a bilingual community bookshelf will celebrate the resilience of West Hill while giving voice to its stories. Seasonal events and gatherings—story circles, art workshops, and harvest celebrations—invite residents to connect, learn, and heal together.
Growing Forward
The Greene Space is just the beginning.
As part of Eden’s Rose Foundation’s broader commitment to urban renewal and food justice, it connects with initiatives like Albany Victory Gardens and The Hive, forming a network of community-led green spaces across the city. Future plans include expanded programming, youth leadership opportunities, and environmental projects designed to empower the next generation of changemakers.
Rooted in Resilience
The Greene Space stands as a reminder that from loss can come life, and from hardship, hope. It is a living symbol of renewal, a tribute to those who came before, and an invitation for all to take part in the healing power of community.
“Even in the face of hardship, renewal and growth are always possible.”
